Elevating Safety and Efficiency at a Leading E-commerce Facility
Hazard: Unsafe material handling and fall risks from working precariously over a parapet wall.

The Hazard
Rooftop maintenance is inherently challenging, and while parapet walls offer some fall protection, they can also create a new set of hazards. For a nationally recognized general contractor specializing in large-scale industrial projects, their work on a new e-commerce fulfillment center highlighted the risks associated with getting materials onto the roof. Without a permanent lifting solution, workers relied on dangerous methods like manual lifting or expensive, temporary equipment such as rental cranes.
This exposed crews to three primary risks:
- Fall Hazards: The parapet wall forced workers to lean into precarious positions to operate temporary lifting equipment, significantly increasing the risk of a fall.
- Inefficient & Risky Material Handling: Manually lifting heavy components like those used in HVAC systems was not only inefficient but also created a high risk of musculoskeletal injuries and dropped equipment, which could harm people or property below.
- Unsafe Access: Without a dedicated, secure work zone, workers had to resort to improvised and unstable methods, which only compounded the fall risk.
The Solution
Flexible Lifeline Systems (FLS) engineered and installed a comprehensive, permanent solution to eliminate these dangers. The custom system included a 1,200 lb. capacity hoist permanently mounted to the 8-inch-thick parapet wall using chemical anchors. To ensure safe and ergonomic operation, FLS also designed and installed a custom elevated access platform with Kee Walk treads, Kee Safety guardrails, and stair rails.
This integrated system ensures that material transfer to and from the rooftop is safe and efficient. The elevated platform positions operators at the perfect height, eliminating the need to work precariously over the parapet wall. This creates a secure, stable, and guarded workspace that is fully OSHA/ANSI compliant, drastically reducing fall hazards and improving overall operational safety. The hoist makes it easy to safely move heavy components like those needed for HVAC repair and maintenance.
