High-Volume Fall Protection for a Modern Lumber Mill
Hazard: Multiple, distinct fall risks across a high-volume new lumber mill, including complex machinery, overhead cranes, and varying heights in a vehicle service bay.
Solution: Custom-engineered combination of Kee Track Rigid Rail and Cable Horizontal Lifelines (HLLs) integrated into the new facility’s structure.

The Challenge: Protecting Workers in a High-Volume Mill
Southeastern Timber Products (STP) partnered with Tolko to establish a new, large-scale lumber mill in Ackerman, Mississippi. This facility, designed to produce 130 million board feet of southern yellow pine lumber per year, relies on massive, complex machinery.
In a modern lumber mill, regular maintenance is critical to prevent costly downtime. This requires workers to access elevated, often hazardous positions on equipment like the planer mill sorters, tilt hoists, and sawmill sorters. These areas presented multiple, unique fall hazards. Furthermore, the Planer Mill Sorter area added a layer of complexity with an overhead crane operating above the equipment. Finally, the Mobile Shop used for servicing large logging vehicles also required flexible fall protection for workers performing various tasks at height.
The Solution: A Phased, Engineered Approach
Flexible Lifeline Systems (FLS) was engaged early in the new mill’s construction process, using preliminary architectural and structural drawings to develop a comprehensive fall protection package. This collaborative approach ensured the systems were seamlessly integrated into the structure rather than being an afterthought.
The project was executed in multiple phases, leveraging the strengths of two distinct fall protection solutions:
- Planer Mill & Sawmill Sorters (High-Volume Areas):
- Cable Horizontal Lifelines (HLLs) were the ideal solution for these long, linear areas. FLS installed a total of ten HLL systems across the Planer Mill Sorter, Planer Mill Tilt Hoist, and Sawmill Sorter.
- These systems—ranging from 190 to 250 feet long—were engineered to allow two users to work simultaneously on each line, providing continuous fall arrest protection without hindering the movement required for maintenance. The integration was carefully planned to coexist with the overhead crane in the sorter area.
- Mobile Shop (Varying Height Access):
- A Kee Track Rigid Rail System was selected for the vehicle service area.
- Two 30-foot long Kee Track systems were installed, each rated for two users. Rigid rail was the perfect choice here due to the varying working heights between different types of large equipment (loaders, tractors). The system’s rigidity minimizes fall distance and provides maximum safety for this flexible-use zone.
