Industrial Self-Closing Safety Gate

Flexible Lifeline Systems has a complete line of self closing safety gates engineered to allow traffic flow while providing hazard protection. Self-closing, spring-loaded gates foster a safe work environment by automatically closing after use securing the area. The system resets itself and does without requiring a worker to reset a bar or chain.

Self closing safety gates provide protection for indoor and outdoor industrial applications including any openings, ladders, stairs, rooftop hatches and controlled areas, where regular access for workers is needed. The gate can easily be fitted to existing systems where protected access is needed.

Are these gates compatible with other FLS guardrail solutions?

Yes, our self-closing gates mount seamlessly with the entire FlexGuard line. They are made from the same industrial-grade tubing, ensuring a consistent look and a high-strength connection across your entire fall protection system.

Can the gates be customized for specific facility branding?

While our standard finish is galvanized metal for maximum durability, we can powder-coat our gates in any RAL color. This is often used for high-visibility “safety yellow” requirements or to coordinate with the building’s existing aesthetic.

When should a double gate be used instead of a single gate?

A double gate should be used for any opening wider than 39 inches, up to 72 inches. This is common in loading zones or large equipment access areas. The double gates are secured with three U-brackets per post to ensure they remain aligned and durable under frequent use.

Is there a way to prevent the gate from swinging over the “hole” or drop?

The gate includes a built-in stopping mechanism that only allows it to open in one direction—away from the hazard. This ensures that even if a worker leans against the gate from the protected side, it will not swing outward over the edge or ladderway.

How does the spring-load mechanism stand up to outdoor weather?

Our gates are built for durability using galvanized, corrosion-resistant components. The spring itself is typically manufactured from stainless steel to prevent rust and ensure the gate continues to close securely even in extreme heat, cold, or high-moisture environments.

Do I need specialized tools to mount a gate to my existing railing?

No, FLS self-closing gates utilize a universal U-bolt connection. This hardware can be fastened to any 1-inch to 1.5-inch stringer or post, regardless of whether it is flat, square, or round. Using standard contractor tools, the gates can be cut to size and installed on-site in a matter of minutes.

Can these gates be adjusted to fit non-standard opening sizes?

Yes, our single industrial safety gates are fully adjustable for openings between 30 and 39 inches. If you have a larger opening, such as for a pallet drop or a large machinery access point, we offer double-gate configurations that can secure openings between 3 and 6 feet while maintaining the same self-closing reliability.

Why does OSHA prefer self-closing gates over safety chains or removable bars?

OSHA 1910.28(b)(3)(iv) explicitly states that ladderway floor holes and platform holes must be protected by a guardrail system. While chains or offset entries were previously common, a self-closing gate is the most reliable solution because it removes the “human element.” A gate automatically resets to the protected position, whereas a chain only works if the worker remembers to re-hook it.

OSHA Standard

1910.28(b)(3)(iv)

Each employee is protected from falling into a ladderway floor hole or ladderway platform hole by a guardrail system and toeboards erected on all exposed sides, except at the entrance to the hole, where a self-closing gate or an offset must be used.

Simple Application

Simple Application

Self closing safety gates are fully adjustable. A single gate and can be applied to openings from 30” to 39”.

The gates utilize a U-bolt connection that can be fasted to any 1″ to 1.5″ stringer or post. The U-bolt accommodates any post shape wether it be flat, square or rounded.

Double Gate

Double Gate

For openings from 3 and 6 feet, two gates can be combined to create a self closing double gate. The gate’s stopping mechanism only allows it to open in one direction ensuring it will close securely after use.

Self closing double gates can be easily adjusted in place as needed to align and meet perfectly. The Double Gate is secured with three U-Brackets per post to provide a secure attachment and durability.

Compliance

Federal Standards: Fully compliant with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.28(b)(3)(iv) regarding the protection of ladderway floor and platform holes.

Structural Load: Engineered to meet OSHA 1910.29 requirements, capable of withstanding a 200-pound point load applied to the top rail.

Spring Integrity: Features a heavy-duty, stainless steel spring mechanism designed for long-cycle reliability in high-traffic industrial environments.

Dimensions: Standard single gates are adjustable for openings from 30 to 39 inches, ensuring the top rail and mid-rail heights align with existing guardrail specifications.

Corrosion Resistance: Components are hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated to resist environmental degradation in harsh indoor and outdoor climates.
