Platform stairs offer a spacious step design that accommodates mobility aids such as walkers and canes.

Best practices for stair design include the following specifications:

For canes or crutches: Each step should be 18 inches deep.
For walkers: Each step should be at least 36 inches deep.
In all cases: The rise should be between 4 inches and 6 inches and must be consistent from one step to the next.

How Do I Stay Complaint?

To ensure proper compliance, it is essential to review local requirements, which are often based on the International Building Code (IBC) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Here are the key guidelines to follow:

Stairs should have a minimum width of 44 inches.
Each tread, riser, and nosing across the stairway must have a uniform dimension.
Risers on both sides of the stairs should be designed to prevent the passage of a four-inch sphere.
Handrails are required on both sides of the staircase and should be at a uniform height between 34 and 38 inches above the nosing.
Continuous handrails should have a diameter of less than two inches, with at least 1.5 inches of clear grip space.

What About FEMA?

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) identifies platform stairs as a viable access option in section C.4.3.2, in compliance with both IBC (International Building Code) and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) requirements. They also include additional specifications, as follows:

Tread depth must be 36 inches, tread width must be 48 inches, and the maximum rise should not exceed six inches.
Sideboards along the outer edges of the steps must be 4 inches high.
Risers must be designed to prevent a sphere with a diameter of 4 inches from passing through, without exceptions.
Light-colored handrails must be installed on both sides and should withstand two years of maintenance-free outdoor exposure.
The top platform must measure 60 inches by 60 inches.
The top surfaces must be slip-resistant and should not use adhesives or paint with added sand.
The design must ensure that water does not accumulate on the walking surface.
